![]() ![]() This really fits into life well as it is a definite life lesson. Sometimes life gets hard and you feel like giving up, but if you do, then you’ll end up regretting that you quit more than you would’ve if you had just mustered through it. ![]() Theme- The poem has a definite meaning, and it isn’t hidden or difficult to determine. If I, being the reader, do quit, then I will suffer and forever be doubtful of my decision. However, now I have had the consequences of quitting brought to my attention. Before, I took ‘don’t quit’ as just a saying that was used to inspire people into putting more effort into whatever they’re attempting to accomplish. Title- After the reading Don’t Quit, the title still has the same basic meaning, but it goes a little bit deeper. This reinforces the idea that if the reader does quit, he or she will regret giving up and surrendering to the weakness. It gets away from the idealistic situations and brings back reality. The third stanza is still running with the motivational idea, by the fourth one cuts that off and begins a new thought. The second shift occurred in between the third and fourth stanzas. The ideas shifted from depressing, pessimistic events to enthusiastic words of encouragement. The first was already stated, in the previous paragraph. As it progresses, the poem is engulfed with confidence and passion, encouraging the reader over and over again. However, the sixth line of stanza one, starts bringing the motivation and support that becomes the focus of the poem. Throughout the first five lines of the stanza one of the poem, the author discusses all the awful things that could happen. The first one I picked up on, though, had to have been pitying. ![]() It all depends on the reader.Īttitude- There were many different emotions communicated through the tone of Don’t Quit. The ‘golden crown’ being referred to could be a number of things: success, money, fame. In lines seventeen and eighteen, the author states ‘and he learned too late when the night slipped down, how close he was to the golden crown.’ Although it creates vivid imagery, there is no golden that is strived for with hard work. The anaphora helped drive home the point that only if and when ‘things go wrong’, ‘the road you’re trudging seems uphill’, and ‘the funds are low’. This poem also takes advantage of anaphora in the first 3 lines of the poem as ‘when’ was repeated for drama. However, poems with a serious meaning, Don’t Quit for example, can still successfully get their point across, even with a rhyme scheme. It seems that often times when people think about rhyming poems, the work of Shel Silverstein and Dr. They want to quit because they know they have to just finish what they started.Ĭonnotation- There is a rhyme scheme of ‘aabbccddeeffgghhiijjkkllmm’ and I think that it almost brings out the poem’s meaning and its importance by making it a bit more playful. ‘Don’t quit’, to me, is associated with someone running a marathon and nearing the finish line. ![]() Title- When I first look at this title, I find it very motivational and incredibly encouraging. So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit, When he might have captured the victor’s cup,Īnd he learned too late, when the night slippedĪnd you never can tell how close you are. When he might have won if he’d stuck it out.ĭon’t give up, though the pace seems slow When the funds are low and debts are high,Īnd you want to smile but you have to sigh, When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill, When things go wrong as they sometimes will, ![]()
