![]() I was amazed at how much cargo that boat can actually hold. The boat stops and delivers supplies at fish farms, lodges etc, (you can’t get off the boat) The return time back to dock would be a bit unpredictable based on the number of stops and cargo. And then there is booth style seating where you can sit and eat or take food back upstairs. When you go below the top deck there is another passenger area with the bathroom, a tiny cafe where you can buy the most amazing muffins, sandwiches, coffee, water etc. When the boat is travelling, the wind can be chilly. There is lots of room to bring a backpack, bringing a lap blanket, layers of clothing, gloves, would be helpful. The top deck of the boat is open air but with a roof top cover and has bench seating. You are a passenger on working boat, and you get to observe this activity while admiring the incredible scenery. The dock was about a 15 minute drive away. There’s a great bar right beside that hotel. We arrived at Gold River the night before our one day trip on the Uchuck and stayed at a nearby hotel. We did this in September and were so lucky to have a beautiful blue sky warm day. Watch the waves, some are bigger than others and if you are focused on the beautiful little rocks it can reach your shoes. It has a peacefulness that allows one to watch the waves hitting the shore and chiming the rocks as they withdraw again. We saw whales rubbing on the pebbles right off the beach. I am a little impaired walking and they got me and my pack on and off the boat. The boardwalk to the beach had benches at strategic places. I had walking poles to encourage uprightness and needed them on the stairs, ramp and later, the beach. One had to go down stairs (steep) to reach the below deck, and the bathrooms. Bring a lightweight jacket, maybe a toque (my summer hat blew off). Suggestion: it was colder than I expected it to be. ![]() Others were there to catch a glimpse of wildlife in the water or on shore. Or buy all three Nootka mapsheets and save in the Nootka Mapsheet bundle.I rode with a friend and her dog (yes they welcome dogs) on the open back deck. ![]() The inner waterways, by contrast, offer mountainous vistas, winding channels and enough attractions and campsites to be worthwhile on their own.Ībout this mapsheet: Use it in conjunction with #202 Kyuquot Sound if you are continuing or arriving from the north, or #204 Nootka Island and #205 Nootka Sound if continuing south. Shortly after leaving the highway that road became gravel and was in heavy logging. Tahsis and Zeballos provide good road access (by logging road standards, at least) with a full level of services including water taxi, which can remove the risk and anxiety of a transit. Wanting to have a look at Nootka Sound I decided to bike to Zeballos. It is also a gateway to many nearby opportunities for exploration on water, including Catala Island Provincial Park, Nuchatlitz Inlet and the more imposing outer shoreline of Nootka Island. ![]() Nuchatlitz is the focal point for the North Nootka region, reached relatively easily from either Tahsis or Zeballos. This amazing combination defines Nuchatlitz Provincial Park. About North Nootka: Archipelagos have a special attraction for paddlers and boaters alike, but nowhere is the attraction more magnificent than the West Coast of Vancouver Island, where the power of the ocean, the beauty of the land and the diversity of the environment meld in such drama. ![]()
